What is publishing administration?
Publishing administration ensures that compositions (otherwise known as songs) receive all the royalties they are entitled to. It involves accounting for and paying these royalties to the songwriter or publisher.
A publisher is the owner of a composition copyright. If no deal is in place with an outside publisher, the songwriter(s) becomes the publisher. On the other hand, a publishing administrator is authorized by the publisher to manage their copyrights and handle the income they earn. While a publishing administrator does not own a portion of the composition, they do receive a small commission on the collected revenue in exchange for their services.
Are you wondering if your distributor collects your royalties? They do, but there are more royalties to be collected than just what the distributor collects for you. In technical terms, the distributor only collects on the master (sound recording) side of the composition.
